The United Nation’s Women’s Guild of Rome (UNWG-Rome) is an organization that promotes friendship and understanding among women of different nationalities and cultural backgrounds. Membership is open to women connected through work or family relationships with the United Nations, its Specialised Agencies and the Permanent Missions based in Rome. The UNWG of Rome has been affiliated with the UNWG network (NY, Geneva, Vienna) since 1969, although this group started in 1959 as the FAO (Food and Agricultural Organization of the UN) Wives’ Group. The group has evolved over time to keep up with the interests of its members and the changing roles of women in today's world.
The UNWG-Rome is governed by the Board of Directors made up of the executive council consisting of the president, 2 vice-presidents (Membership Affairs and Fundraising), treasurer, 2 secretaries (Recording and Database); and the chairpersons of eight standing committees: hospitality, membership, newsletter, programme, publicity, spousal and family issues, welcome and welfare.
Through its fundraising efforts (including the traditional and Rome landmark UNWG Bazaar in late November, the UNWG Rome Welfare Fund supports small projects throughout the world aimed at assisting women and children. For the year 2006-07, the UNWG-Rome funded a total of 25 projects totalling over Euro 23,000. (The list of the projects we supported this year are listed elsewhere on this site.)
